Data Centre Integration
Wave Swell Energy (WSE) is exploring a bold new frontier at the intersection of renewable energy, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure: integrated wave-powered data centres.
As global AI adoption accelerates, data centres are expected to dramatically increase their electricity consumption by 2030. Developers are already facing growing challenges securing reliable renewable energy sources, obtaining sufficient water for cooling and accessing suitable land and grid infrastructure. WSE believes the ocean may offer a compelling solution.
The company’s concept combines its patented wave energy converter technology with integrated modular data centre infrastructure housed within or directly behind, the wave energy platform itself. Rather than simply generating electricity for export, the platform would operate as a self-powered microgrid — generating renewable energy on-site and consuming it internally to power AI and compute workloads.
One of the most attractive aspects of the concept is its ability to address several major constraints currently impacting land-based data centres. The nearshore deployment model provides direct access from land for construction and maintenance, reducing execution risk and capital costs compared to distant offshore infrastructure. Fibre optic connectivity from shore also allows high-speed data transmission without reliance on satellite communications.
Cooling is another major advantage. By leveraging unlimited seawater cooling, the platform could achieve highly efficient operations with significantly improved Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metrics — potentially around ~1.1 — well below many traditional facilities. The concept also removes the need for costly land acquisition and large-scale grid connection infrastructure.
WSE has begun systematically assessing the technical and commercial feasibility of integrating data centre modules into its wave energy technology and is engaging with specialist expertise to support early-stage concept development.
If successful, the opportunity could position WSE within one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. The convergence of AI demand, renewable energy requirements, and innovative coastal infrastructure presents a significant long-term growth opportunity that could materially enhance the company’s strategic value.
